The upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular web novel and webtoon The Remarried Empress is drawing unexpectedly rave reviews ahead of its release. Despite lingering concerns over adapting a romance-fantasy series into live action, positive reactions like “It’s much more entertaining than expected” are flooding in as actual footage is unveiled, boosting anticipation.

On October 31, KBS 2TV’s film preview show I Love Movie released an approximately 8-minute highlight clip of the Disney+ Original Series The Remarried Empress. Since its broadcast, the video has gone viral across online communities and social media platforms, sparking intense discussion.

The Remarried Empress is a grand romance-fantasy drama following Empress Navier (played by Shin Min Ah) of the Eastern Empire. After being served divorce papers by Emperor Sovieshu (Ju Ji Hoon), who fell for Rashta (Lee Se Young), an escaped slave, Navier accepts the divorce on the condition that her remarriage to Prince Heinrey (Lee Jong Suk) of the Western Kingdom be approved.

Attention was heavily drawn to the project as it attempts to bring a Western imperial romance-fantasy world—a rarity in Korean drama productions—to life while maintaining the original story’s universe. Many initially worried that elements like extravagant dresses, grand palaces, emperors, and empresses might feel unnatural or awkward on screen.

However, the released footage captivated viewers with a surprisingly natural depiction of the imperial court alongside the actors’ strong character portrayals.

The clip begins as Emperor Sovieshu brings Rashta, an escaped slave, into the imperial palace. Sovieshu explains, “She is a severely injured woman, so I am merely taking care of her.” However, Empress Navier firmly demands that Rashta be sent to the West Palace, stating, “Any woman allowed to stay in the imperial palace requires permission from me, the mistress of the West Palace—whether as a maid, a lady-in-waiting, or a concubine.” Sovieshu retorts, “In that case, I shall ask for your permission now. I intend to take Rashta as my concubine.”

Sovieshu further displays his affection for Rashta, adding, “Thanks to that child, I felt what fluttering excitement is for the very first time.”

Lee Se Young, playing Rashta, also captured viewers’ attention with her innocent yet irritating demeanor. Provoking Navier, Rashta says, “Aren’t Your Imperial Majesty and I practically like sisters? After all, we share the same husband. May I call you ‘older sister’?”

Conflict subsequently erupts between Rashta and Navier’s lady-in-waiting. As Sovieshu takes Rashta’s side, the rift between the imperial couple deepens further.

A furious Navier confronts Sovieshu, saying, “Sending my lady-in-waiting to prison right in front of Rashta just to make a point—was that not a humiliation to me? You asked if I have changed? The one who changed is you, Your Majesty.”

Before the eyes of a heartbroken Navier, Prince Heinrey of the Western Kingdom makes his appearance. Following a scene where he comforts Navier in the form of a bird, Heinrey adds heart-fluttering tension by greeting her with, “My Queen.” Later, during the New Year’s festival in front of a large crowd, Sovieshu delivers another humiliation to his wife by asking, “May I dance with Rashta first? This is the only song we practiced together.” Sovieshu’s choice to dance with Rashta before his own empress deepens their irreparable rift.

Ultimately, Sovieshu decides to divorce the empress, and Navier makes the unconventional choice to accept the divorce only under the condition that her remarriage to Heinrey is approved.

Even with just an 8-minute clip, the intricate relationships and conflicts among the four lead characters were clearly defined, prompting diverse reactions online.

Netizens expressed high expectations with comments like, “If The Remarried Empress succeeds, it will open a whole new chapter for the K-drama industry,” “I never imagined they would film a romance-fantasy webtoon in full live-action,” and “If this succeeds, we’re going to get so many romance-fantasy dramas.”

In particular, unexpectedly positive feedback poured in, including: “I was worried it would look cheap like Extreme Surprise, but it actually looks really good,” “I was worried after seeing the still cuts, but the actors’ performances completely carry it,” and “I had doubts, but watching the video got me genuinely excited.”

The actors’ character portrayals also drew significant attention. Regarding Lee Jong Suk, fans commented, “Lee Jong Suk is absolute perfection for this kind of romance,” and “Lee Jong Suk embraced the romance-fantasy vibe best.” Lee Se Young received praise for bringing out Rashta’s lovable yet infuriating charm, while viewers reacted to Ju Ji Hoon by saying, “He acts so well that it makes me even more furious.”

Opinions regarding Shin Min Ah’s character interpretation and vocal tone were varied. While some felt her portrayal differed slightly from the original webtoon image of Navier, others praised her for capturing the empress’s refined, elegant aura.

As such, The Remarried Empress is generating intense discussion surrounding its casting, acting performances, costumes, and art direction even before its premiere. Above all, it is noteworthy that positive reactions are taking over despite widespread initial skepticism toward live-action romance-fantasy adaptations.

Whether the romance-fantasy universe familiar to web novel and webtoon readers can succeed as a live-action Korean drama remains to be seen. As expectations rise among fans of the original work and the general public, eyes are focused on whether The Remarried Empress can demonstrate the viability of live-action romance-fantasy adaptations and open a new era for Korean television.

Meanwhile, The Remarried Empress will premiere Episodes 1 through 4 on Disney+ on November 4, followed by 2 episodes released every Wednesday for a total of 10 episodes.
