The controversy began when Ningning recently changed her official Instagram profile picture. At first glance, the image appeared to be a simple gray background featuring a white stick-figure icon, resembling Instagram’s default profile picture. However, upon closer inspection, the enlarged image reveals the figure raising one hand and giving a middle finger gesture.
This discovery immediately caused an uproar within the fandom. Some fans expressed negative reactions, commenting, “Is she picking a fight with fans?”, “Her words and actions as an idol are way too careless,” and “This really lowers my favorability toward her.” Others went so far as to question, “Does she hate her fans?”
Speculation quickly mounted regarding why Ningning chose that specific image. On various international social media platforms, some users interpreted it as a directed message toward certain fans or critics.
As criticism mounted, Ningning changed her profile picture once again. The new image features a pixelated, blurred silhouette of a person, removing the visible hands and middle finger gesture seen in the previous image.
Meanwhile, Ningning’s group, aespa, released four solo tracks—previously showcased during their fourth solo concert—as digital singles on September 14. Ningning participated in writing and composing her solo ballad track, “I Love You But I Gotta Let You Go.” The song conveys the painful emotion of having to let go of a loved one and was first performed during their concert at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul back in August.
